S9E4: Insights on medicine and mental health: a perspective
Tuesday Mar 07, 2023
Tuesday Mar 07, 2023
Today's program focuses on interactions between the medical and psychological worlds. Join Dr. Blevins and me as we welcome PWN contributor, marriage and family therapist, and author Linda Rio for a fascinating discussion on how pituitary disease, or any chronic disease, manifests itself mentally and emotionally. Listen as we muse on how emotional health and psychological distress can affect people's daily lives and how they deal with their disorders. Our talk covers other interesting issues, including how the medical and psychological world intersect, doctor-patient interactions and expectations, the influence of social media, and dr. Google, and the sorry state of some people's interactions and behaviors.

Also, my experience is the complete opposite. My anxiety is crippling, none of my providers want to treat anxiety with appropriate medication. They say go to therapy. Like ummm, my cortisol is 26x normal, what’s therapy gonna do for my anxiety? Come on.

The pandemic was nice for many of us, and also many of us loved wearing masks to hide our hirsutism.

Let me also share this: I was dismissed from many Endos with high cortisol, high ACTH and pit tumors. FOUR of them. It happens ALL the time! They insisted that my condition was not pathological but psychosomatic (when it obviously wasn’t!) I self diagnosed after 16 years, and was correct. It HAPPENS! Please know that.

Thank you SO MUCH for having this conversation!!!!! I am a Cushings Disease patient (16 years undiagnosed) was diagnosed in 2021. Anyway, the I would say, I am more disabled mentally than physically due to my condition. My emotional liability, the crying, the anxiety is SO severe (and untreated) and it’s a nightmare. The insomnia doesn’t help. This is a massive piece of the puzzle most physicians have no clue about, and they should. Thank you so much! I am getting Linda’s book ASAP!
